Signs you need boiler servicing — and what to do next
Why regular boiler servicing matters
An annual boiler service is not paperwork — it’s a safety and reliability check that keeps your heating working through Birmingham winters. A serviced boiler runs more efficiently, is less likely to break down, and gives you documentary proof for landlords or warranty claims.
Infinity Heating Solutions and Property Maintenance Ltd recommend annual servicing for most domestic boilers, especially older Worcester and Ideal models.
Common signs you need boiler servicing
If you spot any of the following, book a service or call an engineer straight away.
1. Unusual noises from the boiler Kettling (a rumbling or banging sound), continuous gurgling or clunking often point to scale build-up in the heat exchanger, poor circulation or air in the system.
Left unchecked, these issues shorten component life and can lead to breakdowns.
2. Fluctuating or low boiler pressure. If the pressure gauge frequently drops below the recommended reading or you keep topping up the system, there may be a leak, a failing expansion vessel, or a problem with the filling loop.
A service will identify the cause and correct the fault safely.
3. Cold spots on radiators or poor heat output. Cold patches on radiators often mean sludge or limescale in the system.
A service will include checks for system cleanliness and advise on a magnetic filter or powerflush if required.
4. Boiler keeps switching off or won’t ignite Intermittent ignition, frequent fault codes or the boiler cutting out can be caused by a failing component (ignition lead, gas valve, pump) or airflow issues around the flue.
Diagnosis during a service prevents emergency failures.
5. Discoloured flame or soot around the boiler. A healthy gas flame is blue. A persistent yellow or orange flame, visible soot, or brown staining on the appliance indicate incomplete combustion — a serious safety risk that needs immediate attention from a Gas Safe engineer.
6. Visible water leaks or damp near the boiler. Leaks from pipework, joints or the boiler itself point to failing seals, corrosion, or a cracked heat exchanger.
Even small leaks can cause major damage if not repaired promptly.
7. Higher gas bills or reduced efficiency. If your heating is on as normal but your gas usage spikes, poor combustion, degraded components, or limescale can be to blame.
A service will check combustion efficiency and advise on repairs or upgrades.
8. Warning signs of carbon monoxide (CO). Headaches, unexplained nausea, fainting, or excessive condensation with staining around the flue are red flags. If you suspect CO, treat it as an emergency: ventilate the property, get people out, and call a Gas Safe registered engineer immediately.
What a proper boiler service includes
A competent Gas Safe service covers visual and operational checks that protect safety and performance:
- Visual inspection of boiler and flue for corrosion, soot and secure fixings
- Combustion analysis and gas tightness checks
- Inspect and clean burners, heat exchanger and condensate trap where accessible
- Check controls, thermostats, pressure, expansion vessel and pump operation
- Test safety devices and seals
- Report on system cleanliness and recommend magnetic filter or powerflush if needed
Issue a service record you can keep for warranties or landlord compliance Infinity Heating Solutions’ engineers work with Worcester and Ideal systems regularly and will advise on OEM parts and best-practice maintenance.
What to do right now — a simple checklist
1. If you suspect carbon monoxide: leave the property, ventilate and call a Gas Safe engineer. Treat it as an emergency.
2. For non-urgent issues: check the boiler pressure and reset the system if safe to do so.
3. Bleed radiators to remove trapped air if heat distribution is poor.
4. Note any fault codes and take a photo — this speeds up diagnosis.
5. Don’t attempt internal repairs on gas appliances. Always contact a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Factors that affect repair or servicing time (and therefore the next steps)
- Age and make of the boiler (older units often need more attention)
- Accessibility of the boiler and system pipework
- Whether parts are obsolete or need ordering
- System contamination (sludge or limescale increases work required)
- Whether a powerflush or filter installation is recommended Service reports will outline necessary repairs and any follow-up work.
If immediate parts are needed and you require an urgent fix, ask the engineer about emergency response options.
Choosing the right engineer in Birmingham
Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer — check their Gas Safe ID and the work they are authorised to do.
Infinity Heating Solutions and Property Maintenance Ltd are Gas Safe registered and listed on Checkatrade for independent verification. Prefer engineers who regularly work on your boiler brand (Worcester and Ideal) and provide a clear written service report.
Next steps If your boiler is showing any of the signs above, don’t wait for a full breakdown.
Book a service, keep a written record, and prioritise safety where combustion issues might be present. For urgent faults or suspected carbon monoxide, call a Gas Safe registered engineer immediately.
If you’re in Birmingham or nearby — Great Barr, Sutton Coldfield, Harborne, Moseley — Infinity Heating Solutions and Property Maintenance Ltd offer Gas Safe registered servicing, emergency repairs and landlord gas safety certificates. Request a service or quote and we’ll assess the boiler, explain necessary work, and provide a clear service record.
