How to balance radiators for even heat (step by step)
A practical, safety-first guide to getting every radiator heating evenly without damaging your system.
If some rooms in your home feel like a sauna while others never quite warm up, your radiators probably need balancing. With a bit of patience, you can often improve comfort and efficiency without touching anything gas-related.
What radiator balancing actually does
Balancing is all about controlling how much hot water flows through each radiator so they all heat up at a similar rate. It is not the same as bleeding, which removes trapped air.
When a system is unbalanced, radiators closest to the boiler often get too much flow and run very hot, while those further away stay lukewarm. Balancing gently throttles the over-performers so heat is shared more evenly.
Common signs you may need to balance your radiators include:
Upstairs boiling hot while downstairs struggles to warm up
Some radiators roasting, others only lukewarm from top to bottom
All radiators hot at the top and bottom, but rooms heat at very different speeds
Safety first before you start
Balancing mainly involves radiator valves, not the boiler itself. You must not remove boiler covers or touch any gas controls or pipework. Anything gas-related must be handled by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Radiators and pipes can get very hot, so use caution. Wear thin work gloves if you can, and keep children and pets out of the area. If you notice any leaks while adjusting valves, stop immediately and call a heating professional.
Tools and understanding your valves
For a simple DIY balance you will usually need two adjustable spanners or grips. A small screwdriver can be helpful for some lockshield caps. An infrared thermometer or clip-on thermometer is handy but optional.
Each radiator normally has two valves. On one side is the control you use every day, such as a manual wheelhead or a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) with numbers. On the other side is the lockshield valve, which is what you use for balancing.
How to identify the lockshield valve
The lockshield is usually the valve with a plain plastic cap or sometimes just a metal spindle. It is often smaller and may need a spanner to turn once the cap is removed. The idea is that it is set once and then left alone.
The TRV or manual control is the one with numbers or a clear dial that you use to turn the radiator up or down day to day. During balancing, you generally leave these set to fully open or at a typical setting you use.
Step by step: basic radiator balancing method
Work on a cool system to start with so you do not burn yourself. Turn the heating off and let everything cool down before opening valves fully.
Step 1: Fully open all radiator valves
Remove lockshield caps if fitted, noting their original position if you can. Using your spanners, gently turn each lockshield anticlockwise until fully open. Do not force if it feels stuck.
Set all TRVs or manual controls to maximum or your normal comfort setting. Turn the heating back on and let the system run for at least 30 to 45 minutes until all radiators have had a chance to warm.
Step 2: Find the hottest radiators first
Start with radiators closest to the boiler, often the ones in the same room or on the same floor. These tend to heat fastest. You can check with your hand carefully on the pipework, or with an infrared thermometer pointed at the inlet pipe.
If a radiator is much hotter and heats up much quicker than others, that is the one you will throttle slightly with the lockshield so more heat can reach further radiators.
Step 3: Close then reopen lockshields in small steps
For each very hot radiator, gently turn the lockshield clockwise to close it fully, then reopen by a small amount. A good starting point is half a turn open from fully closed on the nearest radiator, and slightly more open as you move further from the boiler.
As a general guide, adjust in quarter-turn or half-turn increments. After each small change, wait 10 to 15 minutes before judging the effect. Water takes time to circulate and settle.
Step 4: Work your way around the system
Move from the hottest, nearest radiators towards the coldest, furthest ones. The further away a radiator is, the more open its lockshield usually needs to be. Try to get all radiators heating up at roughly the same pace.
Use touch or a thermometer to compare. Ideally, each radiator should be hot across the top and comfortably warm down the front, without any being scalding-hot while others are just tepid.
Common issues and what balancing will not solve
Balancing is powerful, but it will not fix every heating problem. Some symptoms point to other issues in the system that need different solutions.
Stuck TRV pins and noisy valves
If a radiator stays stone cold even with the TRV on maximum, gently remove the TRV head and check the small metal pin underneath. It should move up and down a couple of millimetres. If it is stuck, carefully tap around it and gently work it with pliers, avoiding excessive force.
Whistling or banging from valves can mean water is being forced too quickly through a nearly closed valve. In that case, open it slightly more and check that the pump speed on the boiler or system has not been set too high by someone previously. Only adjust pump speed if it is on an accessible external control and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Sludge, air and when balancing will not help
If radiators are hot at the top but cold at the bottom, that often points to sludge build-up rather than balancing. Repeatedly needing to bleed radiators or hearing gurgling suggests trapped air or a system issue.
Balancing also will not compensate for a failing pump, an undersized boiler or poor pipework design. If multiple radiators never get warm, or the boiler overheats or shuts down frequently, the underlying problem is likely elsewhere in the system.
When to call a Gas Safe heating engineer
There is a sensible point to stop experimenting and get professional help. Contact a Gas Safe heating engineer if you notice recurring cold spots that do not improve, even after careful balancing and bleeding.
Other clear signs include regular pressure loss on a combi boiler, needing to bleed radiators more than once or twice a year, suspected sludge in several radiators, or any leaks, corrosion or staining around valves and pipe joints.
