Radiator not heating up? 9 causes and what to check first
If a radiator is cold while the rest of your heating seems fine, it is frustrating and often confusing. The good news is that many common causes are simple to spot, and there are safe checks you can do before calling out an engineer.
Single radiator or several not heating?
Before you start, note how many radiators are affected. One cold radiator usually points to a local issue such as a valve, trapped air or sludge in that unit.
Several cold radiators, or a whole floor not heating, often suggests a wider problem such as low system pressure, a pump or zone valve fault, or balancing issues.
One radiator cold: focus on its valves, air, balancing and sludge.
Several radiators cold: also check boiler pressure, programmer, pump and zone valves.

1. TRV and lockshield valve positions
What it looks like: The radiator stays cold, or only lukewarm, even when your heating is on. The thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) head may be turned down or stuck.
What to try: Make sure the TRV is set to a higher number and the other end of the radiator (the lockshield) is fully open by turning it anticlockwise a little. Check that the radiator gets hot after 15 to 20 minutes.
When to call an engineer: If the valve body is leaking, seized, or you are not confident adjusting the lockshield, stop and book a professional. Valve replacement involves draining and refilling the system correctly.
2. Trapped air in the radiator
What it looks like: The top of the radiator is cool or cold, while the bottom is hot. You may hear gurgling sounds from the radiator or pipework.

When to call an engineer: Full system balancing involves taking temperature readings and carefully resetting all lockshields. It is best handled by a heating engineer for consistent, efficient results.
4. Low boiler pressure
What it looks like: Multiple radiators are cooler than usual, or some upstairs radiators will not heat. The pressure gauge on your boiler is below the recommended range, often under 1.0 bar when cold.
What to try: Check your boiler manual to see the correct pressure, usually around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If you are comfortable and it is safe to do so, use the filling loop to gently top up to the recommended level, then restart the boiler.
When to call an engineer: If pressure keeps dropping, you cannot see a clear way to top it up, or there is water under the boiler or radiators, you need a professional to find and fix the leak or expansion issues.
5. Pump or zone valve problems
What it looks like: Several radiators are cold on one level, or all upstairs are cold while downstairs are warm. The boiler may fire briefly then switch off because hot water is not circulating properly.
What to try: Check that room thermostats and heating controls are calling for heat. You may be able to hear or feel the pump running gently near the boiler. Make sure any motorised valves are set to the correct position and that their manual levers are not locked in "off".
When to call an engineer: Faulty pumps and motorised valves should not be repaired by a homeowner. They usually require electrical testing, safe isolation and sometimes work inside the boiler casing, which must be left to a qualified engineer.
6. Sludge and magnetite build up
What it looks like: The bottom of the radiator is cold or has cold patches, while the top is hot. The water that comes out when you bleed it may be very dark or black and gritty.
What to try: You can gently feel the radiator surface (with care) to check for cold spots. Turning the radiator off and back on again is unlikely to clear sludge, but it helps confirm that the issue is local to that radiator.
When to call an engineer: Sludge removal often needs a powerflush or chemical clean, followed by inhibitor protection. A professional can also advise on adding a magnetic filter to reduce future build up.
7. Incorrect thermostat or programmer settings
What it looks like: Radiators stay cold even though the boiler seems fine. The room thermostat may be set very low or in a warm spot, or the heating programme may not be calling for heat when you expect.
What to try: Check the programmer or smart controls are set to "heating on" at the right times. Turn the room thermostat up a few degrees and wait to see if the boiler and radiators respond. Replace batteries in wireless thermostats if needed.
When to call an engineer: If controls are unresponsive, frequently losing settings, or you are unsure how to set them up, an engineer or heating controls specialist can test, reset or replace them safely.
8. Stuck radiator valve pin
What it looks like: The TRV head is turned up, but the radiator stays cold. When you remove the TRV head, a small pin underneath may be stuck in the down position.
What to try: With the heating off, you can gently press the pin a few times with the tip of a screwdriver or similar, seeing if it pops up a little and moves freely. Do not twist or force it sideways, and replace the TRV head securely.
When to call an engineer: If the pin will not move, the valve leaks, or you feel unsure handling it, stop and arrange for a professional. Forcing a stuck pin can lead to leaks and water damage.
9. System design or undersized radiator
What it looks like: The radiator gets warm but never really heats the room, especially on colder days. The room may feel chilly even when other areas of the home are comfortable.
What to try: Check windows and draughts, and make sure furniture is not blocking the radiator. Compare the size of that radiator to others in similar sized rooms as a rough guide.
When to call an engineer: If the radiator is too small for the room or the pipework layout is poor, a heating engineer can calculate the correct output and recommend upgrades or pipework changes.
Things you should not do
Some actions can cause more harm than good and are unsafe for homeowners. A few key points to avoid can save you serious trouble later.
Do not force stiff valves with tools, as this can snap them and cause major leaks.
Do not over pressurise the boiler beyond the manufacturer range to "see if it helps".
Do not open or tamper with gas components or anything sealed within the boiler casing.
